'Claim to Fame' finale: Winner L.C. on what she'll do with the money

To paraphrase Keke Palmer's viral moment, sorry to this man, Logan Crosby.

Loreal Palmer, Keke's older sister, triumphed over Crosby, who's Jason Aldean's cousin, in the first-season finale of ABC's "Claim to Fame" Tuesday.

Loreal, who went by "L.C." on the game show, clinched the $100,000 prize after concealing her connection to her famous relative for the majority of the show's 10-episode run. In Tuesday's finale, the remaining contestants – Palmer, Crosby and Dean Martin's granddaughter Pepper Martin – competed in a Truth or Dare challenge in front of nine eliminated housemates.

"I was mortified because I had something to do with almost all of them getting out of the house," Palmer, 34, says of her shock at reuniting with the ousted challengers. But when she realized the contestants hadn't seen everything play out on TV, she thought "OK, great. This won't be so bad because they don't know yet."

For answering a revealing Truth question, each contestant got two points. Dares were disgusting – think taking a shot of hot sauce or eating a scorpion – and worth only one point. Palmer and Martin opted to tell the truth to rack up the most points, because the winner of the challenge decided the final two guessers of the season. Both earned eight points, and in a tie breaker battled to see who could down a plate of five bugs the fastest.

"The smell was overpowering," Palmer says of the challenge. "Immediately when the top (of the platter) came off, my nostrils flared. My eyes began to tear." The first bug "was like sandpaper, and the most disgusting old, left-out tuna. My body did not want it to go down."

Palmer reveals what her famous sister, who's 29, thought of "Claim"; her strategy (which almost involved a British accent); and how she's going to spend her prize money. (Edited for length and clarity.)

Question: What did Keke think of "Claim to Fame" as an opportunity for you?

Loreal Palmer: I told her "Can you believe they reached out to me for this?" And she's like, "Um, yes! And you're doing it." There was never, in her mind, another option for me.

Q: What was your strategy going into the house?

Palmer: My original strategy was to do this British accent and just really throw everyone off. But then I thought about it, and I was like, I know myself and one day I'm just going to wake up early in the morning and just be talking in my regular voice. So I was like, "OK, that's awful." And then I just decided to change the gender (of my relative). I did a lot of research and I was like, OK, there's a large pool of older Black male actors. So let's say that your celebrity is your father, because then the possibilities are almost limitless.

Q: The questions asked during Truth or Dare were pretty revealing. Did you ever think of ditching your strategy of sticking to the truth?

Palmer: Never once did it cross my mind, for two reasons. No. 1: My questions were pretty revealing, even if I didn't give an answer. No. 2: Pepper, at that point, already knew that we knew who she was. So I knew that she wasn't going to take a dare because she had nothing to lose. She wanted to rack up those points, so I had to stay right along there with her.

Q: You and Martin tie, and out come the bugs. What is going through your mind when you learn you have to eat them as quickly as possible?

Palmer: I immediately cry. I'm a huge "Fear Factor" fan, and this is one of the things that I always said I would not be able to do. I would have to just say, "Thanks for having me," and leave. But I kept telling myself, "You've come this far. You're not going to die eating these bugs. Just do it as quickly as possible and be done."

Q: When you brought your former housemate Brittany Favre-Mallion Crosby's clue, and she mentioned country artist Luke Bryan, did you suspect she was lying to you?

Palmer: I knew she was lying, and it was at that moment – I hope this doesn't sound mean – I was happy she left when she did, because I thought we were more of an alliance. But when she said Luke Bryan, I was like, "OK, she wants Logan to win, so she is not going to give me any information."

Q: What are you going to do with your winnings?

Palmer: I want to start my own production company. I want to do indie horror movies. I'm also a student (studying creative writing). So, I've been putting it on the back burner and just focusing on school. But this could help me create some cool shorts to create that interest around me being a filmmaker.

Q: How has this experience changed you?

Palmer: Before this show, I had extreme social anxiety. I used to have to – well, still do – have to talk myself into going to class or talk myself into just going to the grocery store. Now I've been on TV, everyone has seen all the faults that I try to hide, all the quirks that I try to hide. So part of me is like, anytime I want to talk myself out of doing something, like "Oh, just order it on DoorDash," I tell myself, "No! You have been on TV in front of millions of people. You can walk into this grocery store where no one is even looking at you."
